Fall in the United States means many things, the return of colder weather, the end of the long summer holidays and a return to school and routines. Fall means pancakes with lashings of syrup, gold leaves decorating the streets, the return of Labor Day and the approach of other holidays such as Halloween and Thanksgiving.
However, Autumn means many things throughout the seven continents. Autumn represents a time to gather the harvest and give thanks for all that they have received and remember those who have passed on before them. Here is a list of just some of the many festivals and events that fall brings throughout the world.
Europe
Entrenennen is the annual rubber duck race within Germany in October every year. 7000 rubber ducks are set within the river Neckar to flash down the river. Oktoberfest in Germanyhardly needs an explanation. The world famous beer fest takes place in Munich, Bavaria each year from September to October and has many parades, fairground attractions and of course, copious amounts of beer tents.
Nuit Blanche or the White Night festival in Paris, an event where places such as museums, art galleries and other cultural exhibits open their doors for free to members of the public.
Jousting of the Saracens in Tuscany, Italy, where the medieval tradition of training knights is continued within modern times, with all the requisite pomp and chivalry. However, fear not, barbarism has been obliterated within the modern-day knights in shining armor; they now joust with puppets known as Saracens.
Battle of the Queens, in Switzerland, there is a popular cow-fighting tournament. In Valais, cows go head to head in order to establish who the ‘Queen’ of the herd is. The winner of the tournament receives the title of Queen of Queens and a congratulatory belt.
For those unlucky in love, the Irish Lisdoonvarna Matchmaking Festival which runs from the end of August to October each year, people can visit traditional matchmakers and get ‘paired’ up with others looking for everlasting love.
Asia
Pushkar Camel Festival takes place in November within India each year; this gathering brings together camels, livestock, farmers, communities and merchants from all over the Rajasthan region. With hundreds of thousands of people flocking to the fair over its two week period, this is definitely an autumn festival worth seeing.
The Vegetarian Festival held in Thailand over nine days in October, is where the Thai people practice the belief that the avoidance of meat during the nine months of the year yields considerable health benefits and is beneficial for one’s spiritual and mental well-being. Activities can include walking on hot coals and decorating peoples bodies with piercings and other elements to honor their Gods..
In China, the Mid-Autumn or Moon festival, takes place during the eighth lunar month of the Chinese year. The festival is to observe and celebrate the occurrence of a far larger moon and more brilliant moon in the sky. Activities include traditional dances and the eating of regional favorites such as moon cakes.
