Meta: A look into the real meaning of Thanksgiving and why to celebrate it.
Thanksgiving, a time of family, friends, feasting over all of our favorite delicacies, cheering for football, and snuggling up in front of the roaring fire with loved ones as the cold wages war outside our houses. Perhaps, the best part of all of Thanksgiving, is that it reminds us to be thankful for the many blessings we receive throughout the year and it’s also a little nudge from our calendars that Christmas and New Year’s Eve is around the corner, so its soon going to be time to pull out your party clothes, stocking to hang on the hearth and of course the tree.
But what if you just aren’t feeling the spirit of Thanksgiving this year, well we decided to solve that problem for you and search out the true meaning of Thanksgiving and why you should celebrate it with your family, friends and community.
Meaning of Thanksgiving
The true meaning of Thanksgiving isn’t turkey, cranberry sauce, pumpkin pie, football, or the endless mountains of dessert we cast onto the table during the weekend long observance of this holiday.
No, Thanksgiving initially started off as a means for the Pilgrims who arrived in America off of the Mayflower to commemorate and be thankful for their journey, and to be thankful for how far they had come over the past year or so that they had been in America.
Furthermore, Thanksgiving has additional meanings such as allowing people to come together, which is an activity that rarely happens within the stresses of daily life. In addition, it allows us for an opportunity to not only pass on valuable community and familial traditions, while also allowing us to share with our children the valuable life lesson of being thankful for all that we have and that there is always something to be thankful for.
Perhaps the best part of Thanksgiving is that Americans all over the country, regardless of their own personal views, circumstances or lifestyles, all choose to give thanks and express gratitude over this weekend, which is not something that most holidays can boast.
Hence, you should seriously consider celebrating Thanksgiving with your family, friends and members of your community this year. Share the gratitude and allow everyone to feel blessed for all of the amazing things that happen to us throughout the year, from career promotions to new additions to the family to unexpected events that turned out to be for the best or simply, everyone showing up to be together over the weekend.
If you still are struggling to get into the spirit, even after all of the reasons discussed above, why not consider watching a Thanksgiving movie to rev up your spirits? If you have kids in the house, then a Charlie Brown Thanksgiving is a must. However for those over the age of twelve or who simply want something without cartoon characters, why not try Jack and Jill or Planes, Trains and Automobiles for some much needed comedic relief over the holidays.
