Fall is one of the most anticipated times of the American calendar, the end of the seemingly endless summer holidays, a return to routine, to gold and red leaves decorating the driveways, the beginning of hot cocoa season and of course, finally being able to indulge in all of the winter delights from pot roasts, to apple pie and did we mention that Thanksgiving is around the corner?
There are numerous ways to get in the spirit for fall, you could clean out your closet and pull out all of your coats, beanies, scarves, jerseys, and jeans, the sheer exertion will make you appreciate the change of season in itself. Otherwise, you could watch some of the many great fall movies, a few of which I will list below. If all else fails and the idea of the impending cold weather is enough to zap away your excitement, try getting enthused by some of the many winter sports and activities that will soon be at your doorstep.
Fall movies
The Dead Poets Society is an absolute classic and can be watched for a multitude of reasons; however, it revolves around the preparations for the new school year, the ideas around returning to school and other things such as uniforms. All big things that your children or even you are busy burying themselves in, as September quickly approaches.
Another more romantic movie to while away a lazy Sunday afternoon is Autumn in New York, the drama is sure to pull on your heartstrings as the suave, but slightly past his prime Richard Gere falls for Winona Ryder, a young woman who is faced with a terminal illness. All of the walks through the parks with the autumn leaves falling around them and the name of the movie in its own right is sure to put you in the mood for fall.
Winter sports and events
Now while California and Florida may have been blessed with a more forgiving climate, the rest of the US tends to feel the cold in a far more realistic way. Some of the most popular winter sports in America include football, baseball, basketball, and hockey.
Football is probably most renowned throughout the world as being quintessentially American, for those hoping to get excited for fall there is no better reason than football, the NFL starts up within the early weeks of September, 32 teams from across the US will each play 16 games during the season, right up until the early weeks of December. The season resumes towards the final weeks of January where the two best teams based on the season’s performance, face each other in all-out war.
Baseball, on the other hand, is played between the beginnings of spring right up until the end of fall; baseball is also a greatly followed sport, where the sheer prowess and skill of the players is what is focused on during each game. There are only 30 Major League baseball teams within the US but there are 160 Minor League teams, so there is always a game to watch.
