Now depending on your family traditions you will either open up your presents on Christmas Eve or on Christmas Day, if you live in certain countries you may even have to wait until January, my word isn’t that just taking it a little bit too far. However, if you’re anything like just about everybody you have your opinion based on your own families tradition on when the presents should be opened and on how to spend Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. If you’re wondering I personally think that Christmas Day is the only time presents should be opened because Christmas Eve is not really Christmas, it’s the night before Christmas, but nevertheless you can unwrap Christmas presents on the 24th of December instead of the 25th if that’s what you really want to do.

Now while we settle this never-ending debate on what the correct date is to unwrap presents and what the exact beverage and snack should be left out for Santa Clause the night before Christmas, we should also look into why we have Christmas Eve in the first place and we don’t solely have Christmas Day in our calendars. In addition, Christmas Eve comes fitted with its very own set of activities to get into regardless of whether or not you choose to open your presents early.

Christmas Eve

The most common pastime to undertake on Christmas Eve is of course a Midnight Mass, if this is a new concept to you, a Midnight Mass is a church service that focuses on the biblical story of the birth of Jesus Christ, and the church service occurs around midnight and is filled with carols, candlelight and many readings. They are truly something to behold and definitely will aid even the grumpiest goat who has been ruining all of your festive season cheer so far to be filled with the spirit of Christmas.

However, there are other customs that people undertake to observe the day before Christmas, certain cultures fast by excluding any meat or fish products until after the Midnight Mass service. A common practice is to not eat a large meal before the Midnight Mass service as the family is awaiting the good news that will be proclaimed within the Church service and then they will feast on Christmas Day. Others choose to have a large feast before heading out to the service and therefore they are all full and there will be no hungry little ones desperate to kick up a scene in order to receive a snack as soon as possible.

Christmas Eve

Certain countries really like push tasks to the deadline and only decorate their Christmas trees on the day before Christmas. These countries include Germany, Serbia and Slovakia. Furthermore, there are others who believe that mistletoe should also only be hung within the house on Christmas Eve. Therefore, there will be no romantic liaisons before Christmas Eve in particular countries. However, the best part of this day is that this is when a Christmas Carol written by Charles Dickens is set and if you can’t abide reading another book, rent the movie or simply sing Christmas carols your spirit will return soon enough.
