DIY Festive Outdoor Decorations Without the Lights
Christmas time is just around the corner and our brains have been churning out decoration ideas since we finished putting our Halloween candy away. The temptation to get started before Thanksgiving may be too much to bear.
The only chance we have is to start preparing for decorations now.
Outdoor decorations so great you can forget about the lighting
We’re making plans for our festive exterior decorations but this year we’ve challenged ourselves to a new task. Create Christmas cheer without twinkle lights. Although Clark Griswold wouldn’t agree, we’re positive your home will look magnificent without 10,000 strings of lights.
Here are a few of our favorite ideas to get you started.
Classic, timeless, luminaries. We mean real, homemade, beautiful luminarias; not the store bought, obviously fake, plug-in kind.
Light the way
The real things are made with paper lunch bags, a little sand, and a bunch of votive candles. Make a ton of them and line your walkway, driveway, and entryway with them. Or only make a few and strategically place them on and around your porch and entryway to add a little something extra. You should consider making this a family activity, the luminaries will be even more dazzling with beautiful memories behind them.
Speaking of candles, you can use candles to add a unique festive style to your entryway. If you prefer a clean cut style then use only your silver lanterns and candle holders, but you can also grab everything you have to create a mismatched look. Either way, a little natural illumination will create a cozy. warm Christmas atmosphere. This is an easy technique to use and create endless options. You can rearrange and redecorate all season long to keep your decor fresh.
The vintage touch
We love a rustic natural Christmas look. Think browns and burlap. You can wrap a few boxes in light brown paper and highlight them with beautiful red ribbon. Then make a few stockings out of burlap and hang them outside instead of on the mantle. For an added touch, borrow your child’s Red Rider wagon and add a small tree or fill it with birch logs. The bright red wagon will complement your rustic decorations.
Get to work
A great new trend is repurposing items to incorporate them into your holiday decorations. One of the most unique and charming is created using gardening tools.
Simply place some gardening tools in and around your entryway and add some greenery. You can use garland, tree branches or even potted herbs. Add a splash of color with ribbons, large ornaments or holly berries. You can add pinecones or luminaries to finish off this casual yet stunning look.
Setting the tone
Take the tree ornaments outside to create a clean and striking look. Place some greenery in your entryway, cover banisters, flower pots, benches, and ledges. Then add large bright Christmas balls to each. Make a large wreath to hang on your door using the same color balls. Finally, hang several from the roof with ribbon to add a final touch.
These are just a few of the many ways you can decorate without having to worry about plugs and cords.
