Valentine’s Day is around the corner, this means one thing and one thing alone for millions of people who are in love all over the world. What is that, exactly? Well, aside from the fact that this is the one day out of the year specifically allocated for you to display your undying love and devotion; this is also the time of the year when you get to buy or make your partner a gift that will showcase the thoughtfulness and care in your heart. This is especially necessary in a modern day life, where things always seem far more hectic than it really should be and where a simple trinket can mean the world if it comes from a loving heart. Hence, armed with this knowledge we here at Sir Holiday wanted to uncover the history behind this tradition of giving Valentine’s Day gifts to our significant others and therefore, without any further ado, let us jump right into it.

History of Valentine’s Gifts

One of the most popular gifts to give to a love one on Valentine’s Day is a bouquet of flowers, but have you ever wondered why flowers of all of nature’s creations are associated with love? Well, aside from their rich beauty, there is an actual historical reason for this phenomenon. Throughout the past few thousand years of human civilization, the middle of February has been a key time for harvest and fertility ceremonies and flowers were a key part in this. This has remained as flowers are still seen as symbols of fertility, romantic love, health and beauty.

The first recorded time flowers were passed onto a significant other during Valentine’s Day was in the 1700’s and this concept was introduced into the world by King Charles II of Sweden. Charles the II of Sweden categorized each flower type and colour as having a unique meaning, therefore depending on what flower you sent to what person, your intention for each person would be very clear. Red roses are of course the most quintessential of all love-themed flowers, however should you be wanting to up the ante with your special one this Valentine’s Day, try stepping out the box and having a unique bouquet made up for her by your local florist?

History of Valentine’s Gifts

Red roses have been popular with love, from the days of the Roman empire, where they were thought to be connected with the Roman goddess of love, Venus. Venus was said to have chosen red roses as her favourite flower and therefore partners in love during those days, supplied each other with roses to signify their love, adoration and commitment to one another. Other gifts that you might receive include items such as a heart-shaped box of chocolates, a teddy bear that has a heart somewhere on its body or a special card. It has been estimated that an enormous 600 million Valentine’s Day cards are sent out to loved ones every 14th of February, no matter the weather.
