Valentine’s Day is going to be much sooner than you think, I mean, New Year’s practically sprang up out of nowhere, hence in order to impress your current or prospective significant other we are here to help. Now besides supplying a bouquet of flowers, writing your own poem, whipping up a spread for breakfast or grabbing a phenomenal box of chocolates, you can always have some great general knowledge in order to help you with your conversation topics. Hence, we have hoped to find you some real conversation starters, or at least a couple things to broaden your knowledge if you are planning on spending the day alone. Therefore, without further ado let us uncover some unique facts surrounding Valentine’s Day!

First odd one out of the pack, can you fathom during which time period it was considered unlucky to sign your name on a Valentine’s Day card? No guesses, well let me enlighten you, it is none other than the Victorians who were rather convinced that if you signed your name on a Valentine’s Daycard you would be cursed with bad luck in all spheres of life.

Next, it is not just romantic partners, or cute kids who are receiving gifts this year. Who else might qualify, well it might just be your furry friend. Yes there is around 3% of the population who buy their dogs, cats and other animal family member’s gifts for the season of love. Now isn’t that just an amazing way of ensuring that everyone just gets a little extra dose of love during the romance fest.

In addition, if you are single and were planning on skipping the holiday in favour of a quiet night in, never fear there is a way you can revel in the holiday spirit as well. Many people who are single choose to celebrate Singles Awareness Day instead of Valentine’s Day each year on the 14th of February.

However, if you don’t want to celebrate your relationship status or any loved ones in your life, then grab a couple of your friends and head over to Finland. Why, because in Finland they use the day to celebrate the bond shared between friendships and people exchange gifts with their friends and celebrate the many adventures and times with their friends, rather than their significant others.

Moving on to the dark ages, ever wonder why XOXO stands for kisses and hugs, well the medieval history can shine a little light on the topic. During this particular time in history very few people were literate and therefore couldn’t write their name. However, contracts still had to be conducted. In order to solve this issue people placed the mark of an X when they were about to agree to something important, the to cement the fact that they were serious about the agreement, they would then proceed to kiss the X. Thus, explaining a little bit behind the reason of why we associate X’s with kisses.
